A Brief History Peninsula Crafts was first formed in April 1997 from an idea of John Mitchell and his wife Edje, who, along with other resident non professional craft workers living on the Shotley Peninsula, felt that there was a need to find a meeting place and venue for displaying their various crafts. Much has changed over the years, John and Edje have moved to France, Lionel Crawford, who was our chairman for several years, has moved to the north of England, but, throughout this time the membership and grown and with it the quality of work has improved out of all recognition. However, the members are still, strictly speaking, non professional and derive great pleasure and satisfaction from their creations. Membership is wide and varied with crafts ranging from weaving, quilting and tapestry picture wall hangings, to bead-working, woodturning and carving, pottery, spinning, stained glass makers, wooden spoon makers, and lace-making. There are those who create glorious 3 D pictures in plaster and collages from news-print and media cuttings, or from embroidery, in fact the list is long and very varied. |
